Thats right, when working correctly airflow into the engine is being measured (by weight!) and then a fuelling calculation takes place. If the MAF isn't working in generally reads low and thus not a lot of fuel is put in which has devastating effects on performance. When you unplug the MAF IF it was working it would make a dramatic difference, little or no difference therefore means it's U/S.

simple question, can you take of maff and walk into auto electrician's and say can you test this please?

Unfortuately no :D in most cases the failure is progressive and not noticable :D the PCM adapts to this progreesive failure and the slack is taken up so to speak, it's the sudden death of the MAF that is more noticable  although it can be noticed by the driver the pcm in most cases doesnt notice it and doesnt log a fault code  Well thats been my experience of Maf failures! 6 so far and I'm sure it will be more before long :D

Yes, of course you can............. They probably won't be able to do it though :D

Sorry, couldn't resist that. It's not easy to check these out without having something to generate the required airflow etc etc. Simply replacing the unit or borrowing one from another Gal is the way to go. Even if it proves not to be faulty it's highly likely you will need it eventually anyway and you do have all the signs and symptoms.

for what it would cost to get it looked at,you can buy a new one and fit it yourself for a lot less.

I got mine off a guy on ebay and he was really good.

I fitted it myself (with help from galaxykid via the forum) and from neil wiles who came out and helped me with the last bit. now i know how to do it it is pretty simple.Make sure you got some mole grips or the like!!lol (if you read my post on it youll know why) :D
